Sistem reproduksi wanita mamalia juga mengandung dua divisi utama: vagina dan uterus , yang bertindak sebagai wadah untuk sperma, dan ovarium , yang menghasilkan ovum betina. Semua bagian ini selalu internal. Vagina melekat pada uterus melalui serviks , sedangkan uterus melekat pada ovarium melalui tuba Fallopii . Pada interval tertentu, ovarium melepaskan sel telur, yang melewati tuba fallopi ke dalam rahim.
Jika, dalam perjalanan ini, ia bertemu dengan sperma , sel telur memilih sperma untuk digabung; ini disebut fertilisasi . Pembuahan biasanya terjadi di saluran telur, tetapi bisa terjadi di dalam rahim itu sendiri. Zigot kemudian menanamkan dirinya di dinding rahim, di mana ia memulai proses embriogenesis dan morfogenesis . Ketika cukup berkembang untuk bertahan hidup di luar rahim, serviks melebar dan kontraksi rahim mendorong janin melalui jalan lahir, yang merupakan vagina.
Ova, yang merupakan sel kelamin wanita, jauh lebih besar dari sperma dan biasanya terbentuk di dalam ovarium janin sebelum kelahirannya. Mereka sebagian besar tetap di lokasi di dalam ovarium sampai transit ke rahim, dan mengandung nutrisi untuk zigot dan embrio .
